Fashion is often about expression, identity, and heritage. At Loop Fashion Week, we celebrate designers who transform traditional craftsmanship into contemporary storytelling. One such remarkable label is SIFAR NAMA – The Story of Dots, a brand deeply rooted in the centuries-old Bandhani tradition of Kutch, Gujarat.
The Meaning Behind SIFAR NAMA
The name SIFAR NAMA carries a powerful philosophy.
"SIFAR" means Zero, and in the context of Bandhani, it symbolizes the tiny dots created through the intricate tie-and-dye process. Each dot represents the extraordinary skill of the artisan who carefully ties the fabric by hand. In traditional Bandhani craftsmanship, artisans are often rewarded based on the precision, size, and quality of these dots.
"NAMA" means a story.
Together, SIFAR NAMA – The Story of Dots becomes a tribute to every artisan, every knot, and every dot that contributes to the creation of a Bandhani masterpiece.
The concept also reflects the value of zero itself. While zero may appear simple, it has the power to increase the value of any number it accompanies. Similarly, SIFAR NAMA's creations are designed to add value, meaning, and cultural richness to the lives of those who wear them.
The Designer Behind the Brand
The visionary behind SIFAR NAMA is Mohammed Rashid Daudbhai Khatri, a Bandhani artisan-designer from Gandhidham, Kutch, Gujarat.
Rashid's journey is a unique blend of engineering, entrepreneurship, and traditional craftsmanship. After completing his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 2017, he joined his family's Bandhani business, which has been successfully operating since 1985. Over the years, he gained hands-on experience in garment construction, production, and the business aspects of traditional textile craftsmanship.
Driven by a desire to innovate within his heritage craft, Rashid enrolled at Somaiya Kala Vidya, an institute dedicated exclusively to design education for artisans. During his studies, he explored new possibilities in Bandhani while staying true to its cultural roots.
His creativity and innovation earned him the prestigious title of "Most Innovative Artisan of the Year" in 2023.
It was during this transformative educational journey that he founded SIFAR NAMA – The Story of Dots.
Preserving Tradition Through Innovation
SIFAR NAMA is more than a fashion label; it is a movement to preserve and elevate the traditional Bandhani craft for contemporary audiences.
Each creation celebrates the patience, precision, and artistry of Kutch's skilled artisans while introducing fresh design perspectives that resonate with modern fashion enthusiasts. Through thoughtful craftsmanship and storytelling, the brand bridges the gap between heritage and contemporary design.
